Outlast – Review

I just tried this games Outlast last weekend and it was really good. Here’s my quick review on it.

Summary:

In the desolate mountains of Colorado, horrors await inside Mount Massive Asylum. An abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in complete secrecy… until now. Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something entirely different. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Review:

Outlast puts you in the shoes of Miles Upshur who tries to uncover the mysteries of a Mental Assylum (not so original), gets trapped and is forced to run for his life. Red Barrels have done a fantastic job combining an intensely discomforting setting, a unique visual look, and an incredibly effective camera gimmick to ensure that nobody escapes Mount Massive without a few nightmares. 90% of the game takes place in pitch black setting. Armed only with your night vision camera you get to witness raw madness and gore!

Immediately you notice that the NV camera is limited by its battery life, so you have to search and find batteries scattered in this creepy Mansion just so you can see whats lurking around. You have to conserve the battery as it gets scarce as you progress. The main element that makes the game tick (atleast for me) is that you are vulnerable. You can’t kill off any of your enemies, you got no weapons and your only chances of surviving is by running and hiding. It’s got all the good ingredients of survival horror game, it’s like Amnesia The Dark Descent with a touch of Manhunt. Imagine Manhunt with no weapons. If the crazies spot you they will beat you down to death or some will just stab you death if you got closer.

I liked the fact that the gameplay hours is not too long. You can beat the game in under 2:30 to 3hrs.

Verdict:

The gameplay is repetitive with objectives like turn 3 valves to get past, find 3 fuses to open the door and so on. If you can see past that, the games has the best horrifying jump scares. Being chased by a lunatic in the dark, with no sense of where you are and a dying battery gets really intense. It’s really satisfying when you escape just in the nick of time, like crawling into a vent or closing that elevator door. The story is nothing new or original but it does have nice twist at the end. The voice acting and sound editing was surprisingly good.
